The power of the sequential story

If you're on Twitter--hell, even if you're not--check out the #comicsdidagoodthing hashtag. So many amazing stories.

Comics have done me a lot of good. They helped introduce me to my manfriend and a number of other great friends. They give me heroines of all kinds to look up to (and seeing Black Canary and Cass Cain kick ass makes me want to go to the gym). They're an invaluable tool for me as a librarian to reach out to reluctant readers.

I love comics. They do good things. What have they done for you?

Way back when Leslie Nielsen helped me laugh my way out of Mormonism. He taught me nothing was sacred.

OK, I just read your post about comics wrong. DUH! Sorry. Comic book heroes take us to a world where rights are wronged, the bad guys lose -- but are also sometimes the more interesting characters, and even women can kick ass.

That being said, I also love comedy. Real life not so much a lot of the time.

Maybe you should have a standardized intelligence test for people before they are allowed to comment on your blog.

As a latecomer to them I figured out that women could really be awesome super heroes with their own identities and actually having strong characters that offer a real sense of the individual and not just a costume and be relegated to a sidekick position. Especially Birds of Prey/Batgirl thus far

@Donna: I think both your comments are totally valid! Stand-up comics and other comedians are important and often subversive. I think Tina Fey may have had a hand in my exit from the church...

@bardologist: Honestly, when I was a freshman in college and had no idea what feminism meant, I started to realize that I was reading about it in the really good runs of Batgirl and Wonder Woman. And the Birds and Batwoman and the Question and the X-Men and plenty of others carry it on. If no one is talking to a kid about politics or about sex or about how to treat people, something has to fill that space. Thankfully for me it was books and comic books.
